Victoria Royals defenceman takes weekly honour

Travis Brown earns Western Hockey League's Player of the Week, ending Jan. 4

The Western Hockey League recently announced Victoria Royals defenceman Travis Brown as the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 4, 2015.

Brown notched five points (one goal and four assists), while posting a plus-six rating in two games over the past week leading the Royals to two straight victories in that span.

On Friday, Jan. 2, Brown had a four-point outing (one goal and three assists) and finished the game with a plus-four rating while claiming first star honours in an 8-1 triumph over the visiting Spokane Chiefs.

On Saturday, Jan. 3, Brown potted his 15th goal of the season and extended his point streak to six games as Victoria defeated the Chiefs 4-2.

Brown, a 20-year-old Winnipeg, MB product, currently sits tied with teammate Joe Hicketts for the scoring lead amongst WHL rearguards with 38 points, and his 15 goals is also good for first in the league for defensemen. The 6’2”, 198 lb defenceman is in his fifth WHL campaign and second as a member of the Victoria Royals. Originally a fourth-round pick, 76th overall, of the Moose Jaw Warriors in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Brown has amassed 162 points (45 goals and 117 assists) in 251 career regular season contests.

Brown was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round, 149th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft.
