UI Storm unbeaten in clinchingCoastal Cup

The Upper Island Storm girls soccer team has just achieved a rare trifecta and they’re not done yet.

The Vancouver Island regional under-18 squad claimed its third crown of the season when they won a closely fought final 3-2 against Surrey Pegasus to clinch the 2017 BC Coastal Cup. The final was held in Aldergrove on May 7.

The Storm were unbeaten in the knockout tournament.

Upper Island, which has four Oceanside players — Alex Shaw, Kaitlyn Lee, Kate Reynolds, and Charlotte Palmer — in its roster, has been impressive this season having won the Vancouver Island Premier League regular season crown with an 11 wins, 1 loss and four ties record and also winning the Island Cup.

The Storm will now be focusing on the provincial championships said coach John Lee.

In the Coastal Cup final, the Storm opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes when Jessica Ory connected on a nice cross and booted it into the net. Pegasus came back and tied it up just before the half.

When the game resumed, the Storm surged ahead with Ory restoring the lead and later on Alex Shaw made it 3-1. Pegasus were able to cut the lead 3-2 but were not able to score again after that.

The team will take a break before preparing for the B.C. soccer’s youth provincial A cup championships that will be held July 6-9 in Surrey.

Lee said he likes their chances at the provincials.

“Our goal at the very beginning was to get to provincials and everything else that happens there is going to be a big bonus,” said Lee.
