Jock Talk: Plenty of games are on tap for West Shore this week

Victoria Grizzlies and Westshore Wolves set for home dates over next week.

The Victoria Grizzlies will host a pair of games on Oct. 21 and 22, while the Junior B Westshore Wolves head home to The Q Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 26 to host the Saanich Braves.

The VIJHL game puck drops at 7 p.m. The Wolves next head across town to take on the Victoria Cougars at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Archie Browning Arena.

The Juan de Fuca Midget Tier 1 hockey team has the weekend off, but the Tier 2 squad has a busy weekend, following a Saturday trip to Comox with a Sunday exhibition game against Peninsula Tier 3 at Panorama Arena.

In WHL action, the Victoria Royals start their week at home on Friday, Oct. 21 when they host the Swift Current Broncos at 7:05 p.m. at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The boys in blue hit the ice again Saturday, Oct. 22, when they host the Everett Silvertips at 7:05, also at Save-on, before hitting the road Oct. 25 to. 29.

Westshore rugby action has the Westshore RFC women kicking off play Saturday, Oct. 22, hosting Cowichan at 11:30 a.m. at the Juan de Fuca turf. The Div. 1 Westshore men host James Bay AA 2 at 1 p.m. before the men’s premier team takes to the field at 2:45 p.m. against James Bay AAA.

In high school sports, the senior girls volleyball regular season is drawing to a close as they enter playoffs. At the time of writing, games were still finishing so the playoff schedule was still to be determined. Stay tuned to lowerisland for more details.

In senior boys volleyball, join the Westshore’s Belmont squad as players head to Lambrick Park secondary on Wednesday, Oct. 26. With games starting at 6 p.m. the Bulldogs will face the hosts, Claremont and St. Michaels University School.

In senior boys soccer action on the West Shore, Royal Bay hosts SMUS at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Play continues Thursday, Oct. 27 when Royal Bay hosts St. Andrews at 3:45 p.m.

After a 12-9 overtime win over Carson Graham last week, the Belmont Bulldogs Varsity football team hosts Notre Dame at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 following the Junior Varsity game, also against Notre Dame, at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs return next Friday, Oct. 28 when the Junior Varsity team hosts New Westminster at 1:30 p.m. before the Varsity teams take to Goudy Field at 4:45 p.m.

West Shore runners head to Beaver Lake Wednesday, Oct. 26 for the High School Cross Country Island Championships. Events start at 3:45 p.m., with the final event taking place at 4:05 p.m. Come cheer on your school’s runners in the Island finals!

With the University of Victoria women’s soccer team on the road in Manitoba, the Vikes men’s team plays two games this weekend. On Friday, Oct. 21 the Vikes host Thompson Rivers at Centennial Stadium at 7:15 p.m. before finishing Oct. 22, hosting UBC Okanagan, with a 7:15 p.m. kick-off at Centennial Stadium.

While the Vikes women’s basketball team is away at the Ryerson Tournament, the men, just finishing their own tournament, return to host the Mount Royal Cougars Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 at the CARSA gym.
