It is down to the final four following the quarter-final round at the 2023 Tsumura Basketball Invitational (TBI) Girls Tournament.
The TBI – featuring two 16-team brackets – held its quarter-final round for both the Select 16 and Super 16 draws on Day 2 Thursday, with the winners advancing to today’s (Friday’s) semifinal round.
All four semifinal games will be played on the south court beginning at 3 p.m.
The Select 16 sees Burnaby’s St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights face the hometown Walnut Grove Gators of Langley in the first contest while Surrey’s Holy Cross Crusaders take on Abbotsford’s MEI Eagles.
And for the Super 16 bracket, it will be Langley’s Brookswood Bobcats against Delta’s Seaquam Seahawks in one semifinal, and the two-time defending TBI champion Riverside Rapids against the Burnaby Central Wildcats.

SELECT 16
St. Thomas More Collegiate 57 - Sir Winston Churchill 51
A game-ending 19-3 run allowed the St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights to erase a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit as they edged the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 57-51. The Knights held a slim two-point lead at the half but were down 48-38 in the final period before their offence came alive, hitting four three-pointers in the last 10 minutes. For the game, STMC sank 10 triples from beyond the arc. Grade 9 guard Demicah Arnaldo led the Knights with 18 points while Grade 10 guard/forward Mia Beliveau scored 13. Louise Dykstra led the Bulldogs with 18, scoring a dozen in the third quarter alone. Crystal Charchuk added 12.
Walnut Grove 71 - R.A. McMath 36
Walnut Grove Gators held the R.A. McMath Wildcats to four second-quarter points, turning a tight game into a double-digit lead they held the rest of the way, winning their quarter-final matchup 71-36. The Gators never trailed in the contest and have now won their first two games by an average of 32 points. Kyanna Knodel’s 22 points led the Gators while Avery Sorenson added 16. Susu Zhang’s 12 points – all of which came from beyond the arc – were tops for McMath.
MEI 75 - Oak Bay 66
Back and forth for the first two and a half quarters, the MEI Eagles seized control with a 14-0 run to defeat the Oak Bay Breakers 75-66. Prior to that game-changing run, the teams were tied 10 times with an additional 10 lead changes. Olivia Sidhu’s 25 points paced the Eagles attack while Lola Reimer added 20. Oak Bay’s Eden Henderson led all scorers with 37 points.
Holy Cross 58 - Lord Tweedsmuir 40
In an all-Surrey clash, the Holy Cross Crusaders received 21 points from Isla Iannuzzi as they defeated the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers 58-40. The Crusaders had jumped out to a 16-5 lead after a quarter and led by double digits the rest of the way. Hanna Grewal’s 14 points were tops for Tweedsmuir.

Riverside 72 - St. Michaels University School 50
A 26-8 first-quarter lead set the tone early as the Riverside Rapids cruised past the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags 72-50. Jorga Hart was dominant in that opening period as she scored 11 of her 21 points. Maliyah Mendoza added 17 and Avery Sussex chipped in with 13. Alex Motherwell led the Blue Jags with 17 points while Maddy Albert added 13.
Burnaby Central 57 - Yale 54
Down for much of their quarter-final clash – they only led briefly in the first quarter and were down 15 at the half – the Burnaby Central Wildcats clawed their way back to edge the Yale Lions 57-54. Down eight late in the third, Burnaby Central outscored the Lions 21-10 to secure the victory. The Wildcats were led by the trio of Kierra Blundell (16 points), Ankita Chopra (15) and Jayla Huynh (12). Kendal Dueck, with 13, and Ella Bohn, with 10, led the Lions.
Seaquam 79 - Argyle 66
In a battle of two of the three top-ranked 4A girls’ teams, it was the No. 3 Seaquam Seahawks scoring a 79-66 win over the No. 1 Argyle Pipers. After a tight first quarter, the Seahawks pulled ahead by 10 at the half and maintained a double-digit advantage for nearly the rest of the game. Seaquam was deadly from beyond the arc, nailing a dozen three-pointers, six of which came from Mackenzie Henderson. Henderson finished with 18 points, Neelum Sidhu was right behind with 17. Camryn Tait chipped in 15 and Callie Brost had 12. The Pipers also had four players finish in double figures with Braeli Adrian scoring 14, Isabella Miljkovic adding 13, Reece Tam with 11 and Sadie Danks with 10.
Brookswood 62 - Mulgrave 60 (OT)
Forty-four points from Grade 9 guard Jordyn Nohr – including a three-pointer near the end of regulation to extend the game – helped the Brookwood Bobcats outlast the Mulgrave Titans 62-60 in overtime. The ‘Cats were ahead six with a quarter to play, but the defending 2A champion Mulgrave Titans opened the fourth with a 16-4 run to take a late lead as they pulled ahead 55-47. Undeterred, the young Brookswood squad would battle back to not only extend the game but advance to the semi-final round. Jenna Talib scored 24 to lead Mulgrave while Eva Ruse had 15 points.
