Happy New Year!
The Comox Valley Glacier Kings are hoping it will be as they launch the 2017 portion of their Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season Tuesday night (Jan. 3) at home against the Saanich Braves. Game time is 7:15 p.m. at Sports Centre Arena #1.
It’s the first of three games in five days for the Yetis. They are in Nanaimo to play the Buccaneers on Jan. 5 then host the Campbell River Storm on Jan. 7 in a 7:30 p.m. start at SC#1. All three games are important to the standings.
The Icemen (17-12-1-2) are third in the North Division, just one point back of the second-place Bucs (19-13-0-0). The Storm (23-8-0-0) lead the North but have lost their last three games, leaving them still eight points up on Nanaimo.
Tonight’s opponents the Braves (21-9-1-2) are chasing the Victoria Cougars (23-8-0-3) for first place in the South Division and are the hottest team in the league, having won four in a row. However, the G-Kings showed in December they can skate with the top teams: they beat the Storm 4-1 and upended the Cougars 8-2.
