Confluence Jiu Jitsu is gearing up for a trio of tournaments this spring. The Castlegar-based team is comprised of adults from all around the West Kootenays. They will be testing their skills in Kelowna, Burnaby, and Creston this February to April.
2023 was a breakout year for the team, making it’s official debut in the competitive scene, and immediately seeing its athletes reach the top of the podium against competitors from all over B.C. Currently the Confluence athletes are sharpening their game plans with specific drills focused on wrestling, pinning, and submitting opponents, as well as escaping from defensive positions and difficult situations. A heavy emphasis is also placed on physical and mental conditioning to prepare for the rigours of a real, competitive match, as well as the prospect of fighting an unknown number of opponents during the tournament.
Furthermore, at an upcoming Kelowna competition an athlete may have to face an opponent much bigger than themselves in the “open weight” divisions, putting their skills of leverage, balance, and mental determination to the ultimate test.
“Train hard, fight easy” is the mantra echoed by the athletes and coaches alike at Confluence Jiu Jitsu as they prepare for whatever they may face on game day.
