A pair of Port Alberni fastpitch players have won bronze medals at the U18 girls’ western Canadian championships in lloydminster, AB after they were picked up by a Nanaimo team in need of players.

The Nanaimo Breakers picked up Chelsea Charlesworth and Shellsea Steed to compete at this elite level of softball, said Alberni Valley Softball Association secretary Shannon Charlesworth.

“The two brought impressive strength to the team’s defence and added offensive strength to the Nanaimo batting lineup.”

Fifteen teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon Territory and British Columbia competed for the championship. BC1 (Kelowna) won silver while BC2 (Nanaimo won bronze).

A bonus for Charlesworth and Steed—both college prospects for the 2015-16 season—was that their college coach from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) was watching the tournament.
