Doubleheader Celebration of Sports event aiming to occur when people can gather

The Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame has announced they hope to induct the classes of 2020 and 2021 on the same evening when it safe to gather at an event called the Doubleheader Celebration of Sport.

They are now accepting nominations for the 2021 class in the athlete, team, coach/builder and community sport builder categories. The deadline for nomination is Dec. 31, 2020.

Nominations are also being sought for the Wall of Fame – a one-year recognition for Abbotsford athletes between the ages of 14 and 25 who had outstanding individual or team performances in the 2020 calendar year. The nomination form is available on the website, and will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2020.

Nominations for a newly added category of Community Coach of the Year and School Coach of the Year will also be accepted until Dec. 31, 2020. For more on the new awards, visit

A date on the Doubleheader Celebration of Sport will be decided when it’s safe to gather.

The 2020 class, which was announced back on April 3, was to have been celebrated on Sept. 26 but that event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The 2020 class consists of pro hockey standout David Van der Guilk, international softball umpire Scott McLaren and coaches Doug Primrose (rugby), Luis Garcia (football) and Harold Willers (track and field).

A number of local athletes were also named to the Wall of Fame for 2020.

The ASHOF, located on the main floor of the Legacy Sports Centre at Exhibition Park, contains memorabilia displays honouring athletes, teams and builders who have been inducted since 2003.
