LETTER: Who is at fault for dock problem?

Summerland taxpayers should be given a detailed, complete explanation for how this mistake occurred

Dear Editor:

After reading about the safety issue of the new dock, the costs already incurred and the cost estimate for replacement, I feel Summerland taxpayers should be given a detailed, complete explanation for how this mistake occurred. Who is at fault here?

I understand the contract was awarded to Campbell Valley Contracting. Are they to be held accountable or did municipal staff fail to review the project plan taking into account the safety of the dock users and the safety of the environment as well as changing climate’s effects on the level of the lake?

Why are taxpayers on the hook for expenses that will total over $200,000 before we get a safe replacement.

In the big picture of the municipal budget, the above amount is a small amount of money.

But we are all aware of the deterioration of many of our roads and recently we have been informed that our well-used aquatic centre needs replacement.

The allocation of every dollar of taxpayers’ money for all projects should be carefully reviewed and researched.

Someone has to be accountable.
