To the editor:
As residents of Lake Country we support the purchase of the abandoned CN Rail line, especially Lake Country’s portion.
While it is a very large expenditure for our district, we strongly believe that this is what our community should do. The benefit of having a safe and beautiful trail that connects all of the North Okanagan is an overwhelming opportunity that could so easily be lost forever by being sold off in pieces.
Over half of our portion of the rail line is waterfront property. The benefits are many but we know personally from living all over North America, that people and businesses will choose to live or be located in Lake Country because of the potential of this trail.
Think how desirable it will be to do the loop around beautiful Wood Lake with the Rail Trail connecting with our new Pelmewash Parkway. With access from either the north or south end of the lake, Lake Country will become the most visited part of the trail. This is the type of enterprise that we should support to make our community an even better place to live, work and play.
This is one of the most sustainable things that our community could possibly do. The conversion from rail bed to a trail will be easily accomplished by fundraising just like the successful Mission Park Greenway.
We truly hope the residents of Lake Country will support the purchase of the old CN Rail line and not lose the opportunity to own this beautiful corridor that will benefit generations to come.
