Walter Gerald March

March, Walter Gerald

July 1, 1931 – November 30, 2006

Born in Stephenville, Newfoundland, Walter joined the armed forces as a young man. He served during the Korean War and in the 1950s Walter moved to Ontario where he met his first wife Audrey with whom he had four sons. In 1976 he moved to the Comox Valley with his family and shortly thereafter retired from the armed forces. Always active, Walter then took up his passion as a commercial fisherman for nearly 20 years. After surviving the sudden death of his first wife Audrey, Walter remarried his current loving wife Ruth in 1990.

Walter had been an avid outdoorsman all of his life and enjoyed hunting, camping, and of course fishing – which he had been doing since a child in Newfoundland. He and his wife Ruth enjoyed traveling across Canada in their R.V. Walter was also well-known for his love of dancing and would not hesitate to tap his feet to a catchy tune. He was also an enduring fan of ice cream, candy and cookies and enjoyed his tea chock full of sugar.

Walter is lovingly remembered by his wife, Ruth; sons: Paul (Monika), Brian (Birgit), Kevin (Sandy), Glen (Julie); grandchildren: Jen (Charlie), Phillip, Ashley, Oliver, Jessica, Braiden, Samuel; great-grandchildren: Haze and Cameryn; siblings: Audrey, Becky, Josie, Theresa, Eleanor, John, Andrew, Albert, Tony and Melvin. Walter was affectionately known as “Papa-Joe” to his niece Debbie (Mike) and her children Mathew and Jarred. He is predeceased by his brother Gary and sister Shirley. After his cremation in early December, a Memorial Service will be held at the Courtenay Legion on Saturday, December 16th from 1 -3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Glacier View Lodge. A special thanks to all the staff at the Glacier View Lodge special care unit – you have all been amazing. Prickly yet kind until the end, Walter had a heart of gold. Your suffering and anxiety are no more. We will love you and miss you forever!
