July 7, 1930 - January 16, 2024

In Loving Memory ~

Thelma passed peacefully in the loving company of her family on January 16th 2024. She was born July 7, 1930 in Drumheller, Alberta. Her childhood during the depression and war years had frequent moves: Calgary to Ocean Falls to Vancouver.

Thelma graduated from the UBC School of Nursing in 1952. Her dream profession led to many adventures. She worked with the Red Cross in Panama then rural BC, including Haida Gwaii, before meeting her husband Herbert in Revelstoke. They both loved to sing and dance. They built a home with four children together.

They worked hard with the family business the Alpine Motel. Thelma had a passion for gardening and baking. Backyard apples became pies. Marigolds bloomed. Huckleberry picking and picnics were typical family adventures. Thelma made the best sticky buns and would not pass up a good game of cribbage!

Thelma and Herbie loved to host friends and family including the Czars of Creston and Turners of Alberta. Her kindness and commitment to community helped and inspired others.

After Herbie passed, Thelma moved to the Lower Mainland to be closer to her children. She continued health care work and volunteered with libraries, charities, and churches. Thelma spent her last decade in Kelowna having fun with family.

Thelma is predeceased by her mother Bertha Dunfield, father Cifford, husband Herbert, and son-in-law Gus Abel.

Survived by daughters Marita Abel, Dzidra Gallicano (Scott), Alvine Bye (Rob), and son Kristaps; grandchildren Christina, Nick (Lindsey), Robert, Thorne, Trevor, Darren; and great grandchildren Graesyn and Kamdyn. Her strength and hope empower us all. Her humour and intelligence will be missed.

The family thanks the nurses and allied staff of Lake Country Lodge for their care and kindness of their beautiful mother.

Celebration of life is TBA spring/summer 2024. Love always.
