Roderick Douglas MacLeod

Born May 29, 1943 in Vancouver, passed away in Peace Arch Palliative Care Unit on Sunday, July 3, 2005 after a brave 14 month struggle with ALS.

Rod is survived by his wife and dedicated soul-mate of 25 years, Cheryl and his 3 loving children Aynsley, Kelly (Lorne), and Brett(Rita), and his wonderfully stubborn granddaughter Ella.

Rod is also incredibly missed by hs running buddies, great friends, colleagues , and members of the Semiahmoo Girls Soccer Association and the running community of White Rock/South Surrey.

Rod was a Surrey teacher and principal for 33 years druring which he inspired thousands of students to do their best in school, sports, and life.

Running over 1000 miles a year for most of his adult life, Rod completed several marathons.

Even with ALS, Rod continued running until December 27, 2004.

In April, he participated with the MacLeod’s Mates team of 197 friends in the 5th Annual ALS Walk, Run, and Roll.

Rod has also saved many lives by donating blood 107 times.

Rod’s determination, humour and competetive spirit were evident in every role in his life; husband, father, grandfather, principal, athlete, coach and friend.

Rod’s greatest passion in life was running and we know that he is now happily running to catch the best of the world’s beautiful “pink” angels.

Rod’s sharp wit and sense of humour will be missed by all.

The family would like to thank all of those who have been so wonderfully supportive.

The many kindnesses touched Rod’s heart and gave hinm inner peace amidst his challenge with this devastating disease.

A memorial service was held on Friday, July 8th at 2:00 pm at Crescent United Church, South Surrey.

In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make donations to the ALS Society of BC, White Rock Hospice or to a trust fund for Aynsley.
