In loving memory ~
In loving memory of lifelong Cowichan Valley resident Robert Alexander (Bob) Vye who passed away peacefully at Cairnsmore Place on December 19, 2022.
Bob was predeceased by his parents George Wilfred Vye and Nessie Syme, and his siblings Audrey (2000), Wilfred (2001) and Gordon (2003). Pre-deceased by his former wife Barbara Trueb Vye in 1999.
He is survived by his long-time love Louise Uppgard Coulthard, and by his two sons Mark and Gregory, plus Greg's wife Rajinder, granddaughter Kaye-Lani (Matthew) and great-grandchildren Sophia & Jackson and grandson Brandon. He is also survived by Louise's children: Nancy, Susan, Richard, John, Robert (pre-deceased by Barbara, 2008); her grandchildren: Nicholas and Bobby, Michael and Jeremy, Taylor and Anthony, Kendall, Abbey, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Bob was born in Victoria, but spent his early years in Koksilah, then lived for many, many years in Crofton. Bob was active in Cubs and Scouts and spent some time in the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers. He attended schools in Koksilah, Crofton, Chemainus, Ladysmith, and graduated from Duncan High School. The last 17 years he resided in Duncan.
Bob is well known for his community service. He was a founding member of the Crofton Fire Department, then continued to serve for 30 years, and was ultimately bestowed with the Governor General's Award for "Exemplary Service". Past President of the Chemainus Kinsmen, he was instrumental in the development of the Kin Park. He was a past Chairman of the Crofton District Credit Union, on the BC Centennial Committee representing Crofton, and one of the founding members and president of the Koksilah School Historical Society for many years.
He was employed for many years at the Crofton Mill as a Manager in Materials Handling and later as Manager of Bird's Eye Cove Marina.
But Bob always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and so he took on several enterprises: the initial development of Roberts Ridge in Crofton, Crofton Mini Storage, home construction and renovations, among others.
Bob will be remembered for his love of people; he had impeccable manners and a great sense of humour. Bob had an acute memory for names and faces. He often told stories from the old days, recalling the name of every friend and neighbour.
Due to the weather and the Christmas season, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Bob would be happy if you donated to his favourite charity: The Cowichan District Hospital Foundation.
