Richard Staples

With joy and sadness we announce the life and passing of our brother, husband, father, grandfather. RICHARD (DICK) STAPLES in Cochrane, Alberta on December 4, 2004. A dedicated family man he will be missed and fondly remembered by his wife Stella, children; Lynn (Dale), Leslie (Ray), Jim (Marcia), Glen (Genevieve), Margaret (Kendrum), Kathy (John), Howard (Miriam) and Ken (Catherine); twenty grandchildren, two sisters (Gladys and Doreen) and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Born in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in 1915 he was the oldest in a family of eight. Having lost his father at 16 he learned early on how to work and the value of a job well done. This legacy endures in the numerous houses, barns, curling rinks and arenas scattered across Western Canada and the Yukon. He established a reputation for quality workmanship and fair dealing whether he was supervising his own hand picked crew or a large crew of local volunteers in the many community projects he undertook. After retirement this same standared of excellence was applied to his garden. From the vegetable gardens which sustained our childhood, he turned to flowers and fruit in a succession of fabulous gardens in the Okanagan. Always a man of few words (unless one dared to sharpen their wit against his in a good debate), he gladdened many a heart and belly with his bountiful flowers and delicious jams and jellies. The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude for love and support received from the staff at Cochrane Bethany Care Centre, Big Hill Lodge and Home Care. At his request there will be a private family memorial.
