With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Patricia Ann (Pat) Borrowman of Nanaimo, BC on September 5, 2023.
Pat was born to John and Margaret Gilmour on April 26, 1944, in Port Alberni, B.C. At 5 years old, she and her family moved to Wellington (now part of Nanaimo) and she resided in this area for the rest of her life. Pat graduated from NDSS in 1963 and then worked as a medical stenographer until she married.
She was long-time friends and later high school sweethearts with Richard Borrowman, also of Wellington. They married in January of 1966, and later that year welcomed their daughter, Shannon, and in 1968 their son, Brent.
Pat was always athletic and competitive. She excelled at basketball and softball in high school. She later became a lifelong fan of curling, skipping her women’s team for many years and winning many trophies. She was also involved with the Wellington Fire Department’s Women’s Auxiliary and enjoyed competing in the Ladies’ events at the Firemen’s Evolutions.
In 1999, Richard retired from Harmac, and they both became avid golfers. They bought a motorhome, and played on golf courses all over the United States. She later took up shuffleboard and won many tournaments in Texas.
Travel was always a big part of Pat and Richard’s life. They toured all over Europe and Southeast Asia, and enjoyed trips to Cuba, Hawaii, and many fun bus trips with friends to Reno, Nevada. They spent winters travelling through the United States in their motorhome, and in summer 2017, enjoyed a trip across Canada. She and Richard quickly made friends wherever they would go, and kept in touch with many of them.
Pat was known for her intellect, compassion, and a great sense of humour. She was fun to be with. She also loved a good party, and hosted many fun get-togethers. She had a passion for gardening and the beautiful garden she created from an empty lot was a source of pride.
Pat is survived by her beloved husband Richard of 57 years, her daughter Shannon (Doug), her son Brent, her grandchildren Katy and Jack, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Margaret and John, and her sister Lorma.
There will be a Celebration of Life on October 8th at 1pm at the Legion at 1630 East Wellington Road, Nanaimo BC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation.
