February 3, 1963 - June 11, 2024

In loving memory ~

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear brother Michael de Pfyffer.

Michael was born on February 3, 1963, in Vernon BC to Bob and Isabelle, the third of four boys. He was a bright and energetic child who excelled in academics, art and sports. Throughout his school years, Michael played everything he could, focusing later on basketball and tennis. He had a healthy social life and was popular with his peers. Unfortunately, near the end of high school, his lifelong challenge of living with a mental illness began.

From high school on, Michael's illness had a profound impact on his life and the lives of those close to him. He spent months and years in hospitals and psychiatric institutions. Eventually, a degree of stability enabled him to reside in a number of group homes close to his family. He was a devoted son, visiting his mother daily in her final years. In spite of the many challenges he faced, tennis was a constant companion and he played throughout his life. In his later years, along with painting, tennis was his one true joy. He had countless one-liners about the game that will live on in his absence: "Cover your line", "Miss the easy ones. It happens", "Make 'em run" and of course, "How's your game?" Throughout his life, Michael played in tournaments up and down the valley, in private clubs and on public courts. The tennis community has been outstanding in welcoming and supporting him. He had an endearing disposition and was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Michael will be truly missed.

Michael passed away on June 11, 2024, after a brief and sudden medical emergency. He was predeceased by his parents and survived by his three brothers, John (Carla), James (June), Joel (Krista), nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. A special thank you goes out to the staff and residents at White Heather Manor in Kelowna and Aberdeen House in Vernon for providing Michael with safe and compassionate homes over the past twenty years.

Funeral celebrations will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 10, at St. James Catholic Church, 2607 27th St, Vernon BC. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate in memory of Michael, can do so through the Canadian Mental Health Association online at:
