In Loving Memory (1953-2022) ~
If you have spent time in the Cowichan Valley, chances are good that you have shopped, studied, eaten, slept in, or enjoyed a building designed or renovated by Michael Innes Ker.
It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of this innovative and capable man who has done so much to build homes and cultivate community in the Cowichan Valley.
Those who knew him enjoyed his quick-wittedness, sense of humour, and willingness to help others. Michael passed away at home, after a short illness, on December 21, 2022, with his wife, Ruth Ker, by his side.
Michael was born in Montreal, Quebec. His early years, as the child of a Navy family, brought him to many different communities throughout Canada and the United Kingdom. As a young man, he left Ontario and made the journey west to Vancouver Island and never left. He had finally found his home.
As the owner and operator of Square One Design, Michael had a hand in numerous developments throughout the Cowichan Valley, and alongside his wife Ruth, was a pioneer and continuing champion of the community and education of Sunrise Waldorf School.
Michael loved a good adventure whether that meant wilderness camping on a remote beach, backpacking on the West Coast Trail, or exploring new environments by land or sea. He was most happy when these adventures included his children, grandchildren, and his wife, Ruth.
Michael was pre-deceased by his parents, Stephen and Diana Ker and his brother Andrew (Pat), and is survived by his wife Ruth, brother Phillip (Linda), sister Pamela (Paul), daughter Aja (Dennis), son Lucas (Allison), and the granddaughters he treasured Lia, Avery, Elanor, and Faye.
