With his family at his bedside Matthew Greene died on January 1, 2023 at the Oceanside Hospice at Trillium Lodge in Parksville, B.C. after almost a year of treatment for lung cancer. Matt was a gentle soul and deeply loved by his family and friends.
Matthew was born on April 2, 1963 to Gordon and Lucy Greene in Edmonton, Alberta.
He is survived by his mother Lucy, his brother John (Catherine), sisters Susan, Julie (Bill), Nancy (Roy), Sarah (David), six nieces and nephews, and a great niece and nephew.
His father died several years ago.
Matt grew up in London, Ontario and Toronto. He graduated from Jarvis Collegiate and attended Queen's University. He was a great athlete, a junior hockey league player and a fine golfer.
In his twenties he travelled in Europe and Brazil. When he returned home, he was diagnosed with a serious mental illness. With excellent medical/psychiatric care, social assistance and family support over the years, Matthew has been able to enjoy an independent and meaningful life.
Matthew and his mother moved to Nanaimo 17 years ago to be closer to family, especially his brother John. In Nanaimo he enjoyed sports events, was an avid fan of the Clippers, Pirates and Night Owls. For several years he volunteered with Loaves and Fishes, the local food bank.
The family extends much gratitude to his neighbors, his many caregivers (doctors, nurses, aides) and all those who touched Matt's life.
