SMITH, Mary “Betty” Elizabeth

Born December 31, 1931 in Cavell, Saskatchewan, passed away on September 5, 2010 at Abbotsford. Betty was predeceased by her husband Doug, brothers Fr. Harold O.M.I. and Jack; survived by her sister, Sister Connie Kaufmann S.P., sister in laws Shirley Draney, Ruth Smith and Katherine Kaufmann; daughters, Janette Johnson (Allen), Pat Catlin (Ken), Leigh Fadden (Alan); sons, Gerald, Joe (Sandra) and Kevin (Tracey); beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty’s teaching career began in Lytton in 1951, where she met Doug. She taught in Abbotsford from 1953 until her retirement in 1989. Betty had an intense love and strong dedication to family life. She was an avid reader, was involved in her Catholic faith, the executive of the Retired Teachers Association, the C.W.L. and other community groups. Betty will be remembered for her caring and giving ways. Prayers will take place 7pm on Friday, September 10, 2010 at St. James Parish 2767 Townline Rd., Abbotsford. Funeral mass is on Saturday, September 11 at 10am at St. James Parish, then a graveside service at Hazelwood followed by a reception back at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Lung Association or the Oblate Fathers MAMI Kenya mission.
