Mary Eunice Holding (nee Winship)

In loving memory ~

Dear Mary left us in the evening of February 28, 2025. She loved life and embraced all opportunities and challenges. Mom was a very kind, dedicated and devoted individual. Mary loved and adored her parents (George and Eunice), and her older brother (Reg).

After graduating from St. Clement's School in Toronto, she then enrolled at the University of Toronto (Trinity College) (with her dad's strong encouragement). During this time, she became a very active member playing on various varsity sports teams. Mary graduated in the class of 1955

with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (major in English and minor in French) and then attended Teacher's College.

Upon graduation Mary and Jim were married (August 9, 1957).With Jim's career in the oil industry, Mary became an extremely supportive wife and put her teaching career on hold while moving to various places. Initially, Toronto was home for Mary and Jim where Mary gave birth to David and Sarah (Brian). In 1962, Calgary became home. In 1966, the family was transferred to Houston Texas, then in 1967 - 1970 to Seoul Korea, and then in 1970 - 1972 to Tokyo Japan. Each of Jim's new appointments meant Mary had to adapt to many challenges and opportunities - each one she embraced. The family was then transferred back to Toronto in the middle of 1972. After settling in Oakville, Ontario Mary recommenced her teaching career (grades 7 and 8).

With Jim's career, there was one more transfer for Mary and they both moved to Calgary. After Jim's retirement in 1988, Mary and Jim settled on Vancouver Island where they enjoyed West Coast Life - golfing, friends and many travels. Mary loved and embraced life - including cooking (the best mango chutney!!!), knitting, entertaining, socializing, bridge, the church, her pets and animals, her family; and especially Jim (they were

married for 66 years - Jim passed away on April 17, 2023)!!!

In lieu of flowers a donation (if you wish) to your local SPCA or your local Food Bank or to a charity of you choice. An informal drop-in gathering for Mary will be held on Tuesday April 29, 2025 between 1 - 3pm at the Nanaimo Golf Course.
