March 26, 1929 – May 6, 2022
Mary Martha Stobbe went to her heavenly home on May 6, 2022, at the age of 93. She was born in Belmont, Manitoba, the third child of Jacob and Maria (Schellenberg) Sawatzky. Martha had a quiet but strong faith in Jesus. She accepted Christ as her Saviour as a young teen and was baptized at age 16.
Her family moved west the following year to the Fraser Valley, eventually settling in Abbotsford.
Martha met her future husband, Irvin, while attending South Abbotsford Church. They were married on September 26, 1953, and one year later their first of four children was born.
An annual vacation was a must for their young family, and they trekked to many places including Yellowstone, California, the prairies, and northern BC. As the children grew older, Martha balanced raising a family with working outside the home, including employment at local drug stores.
After retirement, their travels took them throughout North America, always including stops to visit their children and grandchildren. Martha and Irvin served faithfully in numerous capacities at Central Heights Church and enjoyed 44 years together before Irvin passed away in 1998.
Martha loved to cook, entertain, volunteer at MCC, and play games with friends. Quiet hours were spent reading, knitting, and crocheting.
Many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were gifted one of her crocheted baby blankets. She was known as Oma and Grammy by her great-grandchildren and loved by all.
Martha is survived by her children Barbara (Bruce) Bruckner, Ray (Pauline) Stobbe, Norm (Lisa) Stobbe, and Marilynne (Vern) Heinrichs, along with 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, siblings Lillian, George, Bert, and Alfred, and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was predeceased by her parents, her husband Irvin, and siblings John, Jake, and Hilda.
We do not grieve without hope, however, as we know Mom is in heaven and we, as believers in Jesus Christ, will be joined with her some day.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Tuesday, May 24 at Central Heights Church. If you’re unable to attend, please view the livestream and tribute at: wiebeandjeskefh.com
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Martha’s memory to Rob and Judy Griffioen with GNI Ministries.
