Marilyn Florence “Mickey” Riley

December 12, 1939 – July 22, 2023
In loving memory ~
Marilyn, better known as Mickey, passed away, peacefully on July 22, 2023, at Echo Village, where she resided.
Mickey was born in Winnipeg on December 12, 1939, and grew up in Port Alberni.
She enjoyed practising with the Baton and became a Majorette throughout high school.
She met and married Doug, settled down and had 3 boys but ended up raising 4 boys, Doug included.
Together Mickey and Doug took over the Pilot Boat business from Doug’s mother Alice. Business was good until the recession hit in the early 80,s. Mickey did whatever, it took to make ends meet. She went to work on the boat as a deckhand. Even during some of the worst winter weather off Cape Beale. Her back was never the same but in her mind. “They weathered that financial storm”.
Mickey and Doug purchased a home in Bamfield in the late ’60s. They used the home for vacations, but also as a home base for the pilot boat during the summer months. The door was open to all family and friends to use the house throughout the year.
Mickey enjoyed hearing how much fun was had. Her motto was “I hope you enjoy the house as much as we do”.
At home in port, every dog, cat, bird or deer was offered a snack a drink of water, a scratch or simply a ” Hello”.
We sent Mickey off on her final journey on Sunday, July 30th, 2023. The outbound log ship “Global Round” departed Port Alberni at 11:30 a.m. with the pilot flag at Half Mast. The pilot on the ship, on nearing Bamfield, veered towards Bamfield and reduced speed, then sounded 3 long blasts on the ships whistle in honour memory of Mickey Riley. Done with engines, Thanks, Mickey.
Mickey was predeceased by her parents Clifford & Florence. Her husband Doug. Sister-in-law Maureen
She is survived by her sisters Corinne, Ursel & Bonnie Pritchard.
Sons Kerry Danny (Eleanor), & Mitch. Grandchildren Natasha, Derek, Brandon, & Michayla, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.
The family sends out a heartfelt Thank you to all the Care Aids & Nurses that made it possible for her stay at home and a heartfelt Thank you all the Care Aids, Nurses & Residents of Echo Village, that helped her during her final days.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni on Sunday, August 20th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
