August 17, 1924 - March 5, 2023
In loving memory ~
Margaret Rose Olson of Golden, BC passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on March 5, 2023 at the age of 98.
Marg was born in Stony Mountain, MB on August 17, 1924 to Bill and Rose Robertson, the second of five children. She loved the prairie but came to Lumby BC to make a life with her beloved husband, Raymond William Olson, whom she met while he was training at CFB Shilo, Manitoba in 1943. Marg and Ray eventually settled in Golden in 1957 and built a home where all were made welcome by Marg's warm smile, good food and various baked goods. Together they had five children grown to adulthood and two, Karen and a baby girl, who sadly pre-deceased their parents. Marg was a devoted mother to her own children and to many others whom she lovingly tucked under her maternal wing. She was the centre of gravity for an extended family and could always be relied upon to keep track of the comings and goings, ups and downs, of those in her orbit.
Marg was a vivacious and funny lady with a ready laugh and a willingness to tease and be teased. She had a keen eye for the little comedies found in daily life and enjoyed a good story. She started teaching Kindergarten out of her house and later at Lady Grey School. She loved to go camping and managed with extraordinary precision to fit her large family and all necessary gear into one vehicle. In later years, she and Ray spent many joyful summers driving their camping van either just down the valley or as far afield as Arizona, making friends wherever they went. She especially loved the Columbia Valley in the autumn months with its blaze of golden beauty.
Marg was an active member of the community of Golden, belonging to the United Church Women, the Golden Lady Lion's Club, Mountain Magic Quilters Guild, Historical Society and the Golden Hospital Auxiliary.
Marg is survived by her children Martin (Norene), Bonnie Jean (Mark), Ken (Britt), Marilyn and Carl, as well as her special niece, Heather. Also, grandchildren Chelsea, Rebecca, Karla, Kali, Sarah, Lisa and great-grandchildren Viola, Eloise, and Genevieve.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Guy and the Community Care Nurses. If friends so wish they may make a donation in Margaret's name to St. Andrew's United Church Memorial Fund (Box 1290, Golden BC V0A 1H0) or Friends of Golden & District Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrews United Church 901 - 11th Ave S in Golden, BC, Date: Friday March 17, Time: 1:00 pm.
