Manuel DaCosta

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Manuel DaCosta on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the age of 78. Manuel was predeceased by his beloved son David and is survived by his loving wife Maria Eduarda of 55 years, sons Carl (Linda) Fernando, George (Debbie), daughters Liz (Philip) and Linda(Jesus), eleven grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Manuel was born in Azores, Portugal and immigrated to Castlegar, BC, in 1957 where he spent the rest of his life. He worked as a baker for local supermarket chains, operated his own business for several years and finally retired from Canada Safeway in 1992. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Manuel’s legacy to his family and friends was his caring, his kindness and his always present sense of humor.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Merritt, the Home Care Nurses and the Castlegar Funeral Chapel for their wonderful care and attention, kindness and professionalism. Special thanks to Father Clark, Rudy Baff and the CWL. Words cannot express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Canada Safeway for their generosity and thoughtfulness. Thanks to all who sent flowers, food, and baking. The many memories and support from wonderful friends and family will always be cherished.

Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Everything remains as it was. The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no sorrow in your tone. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was, There is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again.
