In Loving Memory ~
Born in Germany, survived the second World War, married Frederick Schenkelberg, whom she loved enough to defy family tradition.
They had two children, Marianne and Peter, who survive Lydia along with four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
With two children in tow, Lydia immigrated to this great land, Canada in 1957.
A true free spirit, Lydia faced almost insurmountable difficulties in her life, yet never lost her wonderful wit, humor and ability to enjoy the best life has to offer, Love, Music, Gardening, Books, Flowers, Baking and of course, Adventure!
Those who remember Lydia know of her sailing adventures with her later love Hans, surviving shipwreck, and making the Canadian National News.
Lydia was happiest while she made her beautiful home in Port Alberni, found work, friends and Hans, who eventually predeceased her.
The last fourteen years were especially difficult for Lydia after she suffered a debilitating brain aneurysm, but as in life, Lydia passed with true dignity and strength. She was deeply respected by all her knew her, cared for her, worked with her and loved her.
I cannot thank my Mutti enough for all she has taught me and the gift of knowing and loving her.
Rest in Peace our dearest mother.
