Lois Jean Newman
It is with great sadness that the Newman family announces the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Lois Jean (nee Spratt), who was welcomed by her Lord and Saviour Jesus at the age of 86 years.
Lois was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan on February 28, 1937, to Ernest and Louise Spratt, the eldest of four children. She grew up on the family farm near the small town of Beatty, Saskatchewan, where she attended a small church and she came to a life-long faith in Jesus at an early age. After graduating high school in 1955 from a two-room schoolhouse, she attended Saskatoon Collegiate, becoming a secretary and securing work with a chartered accounting firm in that city. Lois enjoyed the many friends she made while attending Ebenezer Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and participated in the young adult fellowship. In 1960 she met her future husband, David Newman, at a young adult convention hosted by her church, and on September 14, 1963, they were married. They established their home in Winnipeg where they attended Grant Memorial Baptist Church, and soon after welcomed their son Kenneth and daughter Heather into their lives. David's career change brought them to Terrace in 1970 where they made their new home and soon found a new place to worship at the Evangelical Free Church where they were warmly welcomed. Not long after, David and Lois welcomed another daughter, Melody, into their family.
Lois enjoyed her many years in Terrace as a consummate homemaker, mother, grandmother, gardener and friend to many. She served her church and community as a Sunday school teacher, hostess and deaconess. As a result of her fond childhood camp memories, she was also a quiet but avid promoter of Rough Acres Bible Camp. After her children began attending school Lois once again began working outside the home, eventually being employed full-time as a receptionist/secretary with the Regional District of Kitimat/Stikine for 19 years, retiring in 2000. Beginning in 1998, Lois was blessed with grandchildren Hanna, Joshua, Alexandra, Samuel, Rachel, Brooklynn, Cassidy, Madison and Bailey, all whom she loved dearly. In retirement, Lois and David enjoyed many years together traveling to exotic places but Lois mostly enjoyed the time spent camping and picnicking near home with family.
On Sunday, July 16, 2023, after a brief illness, Lois was welcomed into the arms of Jesus. She is survived by her husband David, her three children and nine grandchildren as well as her sister Yvonne (Lorne) and brothers Donald (Lorna) and Ross (Donna), and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service in her honour will be held at the Evangelical Free Church in Terrace on July 29, 2023, at 1 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lois' memory to Rough Acres Bible Camp in Houston, B.C., through their website (
