April 9, 1936 - January 20, 2023
After a lengthy struggle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Joy passed away peacefully in her sleep at home. Joy is survived by her daughters Darlene Harris (Gary) and Diane Bridge (Daryl), son Dan Whalley (Collette), stepson Greg Andreassen, 12 grandchildren, 25 great children and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Thor, stepdaughters Wanda Marais and Susan Fourchalk, and brother Dan Brain.
Joy was born in Powell River, moved with her family to Vancouver at 5 years old and eventually settled in Richmond. Joy attended high school in Richmond and at 18 years old married her first husband Gordon Whalley with whom she had three children. The family moved to the Ucluelet/ Tofino area and established a very successful concrete business. Joy also enjoyed working at the local Credit Union.
Joy married her second husband Thor in 1973 and moved to Langley. Joy spent many years working at TD Bank. Upon Joy and Thor's retirement they moved to Yarrow. They enjoyed those early retirement years by travelling to Arizona for part of the winter and spending as much time as possible at their waterfront cabin on Sheridan Lake. Many seasons were spent at the cabin creating fond memories with family and friends.
Upon Thor's need to be in a fulltime care home Joy eventually sold the family home and moved to Cheam Village. Joy thoroughly enjoyed the community atmosphere, was involved in organizing many events and made many longtime friends. In particular, Joy treasured her time with Lynn, Linda and Margaret, and was very appreciative of all the day to day support they provided her. The family would also like to recognize the many Cheam Village residents who befriended her and helped keep an eye on her over the past number of months.
Thank you to family and friends for their prayers, love and support all these years. Joy loved the Lord and now is home with her Heavenly Father. She was much loved and will be sadly missed.
Church service and celebration of life to be held at Cooke's Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 2nd at 1:30.
