The Nugent family is sad to share the news of John's passing, at 90 years of age, in Nanaimo, on February 2, 2022.
John is survived by Bernice, his wife of 65 years, three sons, Barry (Cathy), Darren, and Scott, four grandchildren, Kiefer, Alexandra, DJ, and Jordan, and two sisters, Rita and Susan.
John came to Canada in 1955, met Bernice, and lived in Norman Wells and Watson Lake for 8 years while starting their family, then spent many years in Chemainus while the boys grew up, then retired in Nanaimo.
Soccer (Manchester teams only, and football, if you please) and boxing were his earlier passions, then golfing at Mt. Brenton, almost to the end.
His career, world travels, and life experience made for great storytelling, and he sang beautifully. He was a physical training instructor for the British Army, then into the trade of pipefitter for Imperial Oil and DOT in the north, and Harmac until retirement.
The Last Farewell
There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell.
