John Dwight Merriman

September 27, 1946 – August 7, 2022
In Loving Memory ~
The family of John Merriman is saddened to announce his passing on Sunday, August 7th, 2022, at the age of 75. John passed away peacefully at NRGH after battling serious lung disease. He is survived by his wife, Barb, of 46 years, daughter, Erin (Brad) and two grandchildren, Rylan and Kaylee. John is also survived by his brother, Larry (Anne), sisters Bev and Wendy, plus nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Mike, in 2006.
John was born in Saskatchewan, but his family moved to B.C. when he was an infant. John and Barb moved to Nanaimo in 1981. He worked as a Conservation Officer before changing to teaching in both the Resource Management Officer Technology and Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources Protection programs at Vancouver Island University. John loved teaching. He was always happy to share stories from his years as a conservation officer with his students and continued to teach part-time into his early 70’s.
John’s favourite pastimes included spending time with Barb on Mackenzie Beach, fishing with friends (Hugh and Bob), walking the dogs at Neck Point and especially sharing time with Rylan, Kaylee, Erin and Brad. John is dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
There will not be a service, as per John’s request. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mike Merriman Memorial Award at Vancouver Island University which supports Resource Management students moving into the Natural Resources Protection degree.
