September 9, 1935 - July 13, 2023
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of James Richard "Dick" Tinga on July 13, 2023, with family at his side.
Dick was born into a large family on September 9,1935 at Comox hospital.
He is predeceased by his parents Ted and Irene Tinga; sisters Francis and Edith brothers Ted and Chris.
He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Eva of 60 years; three children, sons Scott (Joanne) Sandy (Sally) and daughter Colleen. Adored grandchildren Randi (Tyrel) Mason, Colin and Chad.
Brothers Norman (Peggy), Stuart and sister Rena (Bill) and many nieces and nephews.
Dick worked hard jobs all his life, At the age of 16 he started with Comox Logging. In the space of only 2 years he was a High Rigger. This was a tremendous accomplishment in such a short time in the industry and he was proud of it all his life.
After getting married; he signed on to be a Longshoreman in Nanaimo and a whole new world opened for him. He gave up camp life forever.
Dick was a true outdoors man. In his youth his original hunting partner and best friend, Dietrick Rautenberg would provide their family table with game. As an adult he got a life long wish. He bought a horse, with the help of friends he trained and rode "Cheyanne".
Scuba Diving with Norm Kogstad and Darrell Fitzgerald was a continuing adventure. When Norm found a huge anchor in Boat Harbour no one believed him until it was raised. It now rests at Nanaimo's water front for everyone to see.
Dick was a member of the White Raven Canoe Club. He was part of the six man voyager canoe teams that paddled from Nanaimo to Vancouver in March to raise money for the Variety Club Telethon. They did that every year for 10 years.
He enjoyed family camping trips by canoe, travel trailer, and for a period of time a sailboat. Family to him always included a dog.
After he retired from work he became a regular going to see Joe and the guys "at the shop"
He said he had a good life and he did!
A big hearted man with a big smile.
No service by request. There will be a gathering for friends and family at a later date.
