July 12, 1951 - November 27, 2024
Irene Smith (nee Paquette), at the age of 73, passed away after a brief battle with recurrent cancer on November 27, 2024. She had family by her side in palliative care at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Irene was born in Duncan, British Columbia on July 12, 1951 to Urbain Paquette and Claire Paquette (nee Bujold).
Irene returned to Nanaimo after living in Kitimat, and met her soon to be husband Fred (Alfred) Smith. They eloped and were married August 5, 1969 in Yreka, California. They lived on Fred's fishing boat for three years before settling in Nanaimo to start and raise their family. Irene and Fred enjoyed a humble, yet wonderful life together sharing their love for the ocean and the outdoors with family as much as possible.
Outside of the home, Irene loved to help others, often making meals for or helping to care for other family members or friends. She worked as a hairdresser in her own salon, Korner Coiffures, for many years before returning to school and changing careers to become a health care assistant. Irene was proud of the care she provided to her clients while working with Nanaimo Home Support. She was acknowledged for her service in 2006 when she was given the Chamber of Commerce Sterling Award for individual service excellence.
Irene cherished her family and friends. She also loved the outdoors; camping, fishing, hunting and gardening. Irene was also very creative and was always finding new interests and hobbies to keep her busy.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, Urbain and Claire Paquette, her husband Fred (Alfred) Smith and her brother, Jerry Paquette.
She will be remembered fondly by her children Louise (Dean) and Allan, and her grandchildren Cameron (Cody), Austin (Kaya), Payton and Sylas. Irene also leaves behind her siblings; Rita, Suzanne, Roger (Donna), Clem (Meiry) Ivan (Debbie), Norman and Noella (Paul) and many nieces and nephews. Irene will also be missed by other extended family and close friends.
A private celebration of life will be held at a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BC Cancer Agency in Victoria. A sincere thank you to those who provided such compassionate care and treatment at the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria, you are truly a special team.
