In loving memory ~
Helene Marie Morgan (nee Sorensen) passed peacefully on January 8th, 2023. She lived 86 fulfilling and loving years. She was predeceased by her husband Wally and all five of her older brothers. She lives on in the hearts of daughter Lise Simpson (Brian, children Ian (Meagan) and Colin) and son Paul (Mary, children Kristen and Kevin). Helene was born on a dairy farm in Denmark in 1936. She excelled at academics and studied languages at the university in Copenhagen, and then worked in that much-beloved city as an interpreter. In 1958, feeling restless, she set off on an adventure to Canada and met a handsome British chap on a tennis court in Penticton. They fell in love, and Helene joked that she was able to see past his one shortcoming - he wasn't Danish. After marriage, they lived in England and then Denmark, before deciding that Canada offered the best opportunity for them and their two young children. They settled in Vernon where they built their lives. They made frequent trips back to England and Denmark, and Helene although a very proud Canadian was also proud of her Danish roots and loved going back to her native country. Helene worked for 20 years in Medical Records at the hospital, and later as a care aide. She and Wally were members of the Kalamalka Country Club since 1969, and she forged lifelong friendships both on and off the court. An excellent tennis player, her cross-court backhand was legendary. Helene was also an excellent knitter, and the family and some close friends have amazing Scandinavian-style sweaters, hats and scarves made by her. In retirement, Helene enjoyed gardening, travelling, and spending time with her four beloved grandchildren. She taught them Danish traditions, expressions, and swear words, rolling her eyes at their mispronunciation. After Wally passed in 2013 she became a voracious walker, heading out 3 times a day and enjoying the downtown area and Polson Park. She continued to love going to the Country Club and swam in Kal Lake up until last year. Helene was a strong, smart, beautiful, stubborn and fiercely loyal woman, and she will be deeply missed. As per her wishes, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, perhaps consider a donation to The Alzheimer Society of Canada.
