Helen Annett passed away peacefully in Vancouver on November 4, 2013 at the age of 94.
Helen was born on the family farm near Simpson, Saskatchewan, the second in a family of eight children. Despite the hardship of growing up during the Depression in rural Saskatchewan, she had very happy memories of her childhood.
In 1942, Helen enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. She was posted to Mountain View, Ontario where she used her chef’s training to feed 3000 airmen. Helen took great pride in her military service and was a lifelong booster of Canada and its veterans.
Upon her discharge in 1946, Helen took a hairdressing course in Calgary and worked in Lethbridge and Calgary. In 1949, Helen married Bill Annett and
moved to a farm in the Dragon Lake area of Quesnel, BC. Together they lived and worked on that land for the next 54 years. Helen lived for two more years on the family farm following the passing of her beloved husband in 2003. She was strongly supported by very kind friends and neighbours during this difficult time. Helen moved to Vancouver in 2005 and since 2006 she resided at the Louis Brier Care Home, where she was loved for her feisty personality.
Helen was very knowledgeable about flowers and derived great enjoyment from growing them. For many years their verandah was bursting with beautiful begonias.
Helen was a fantastic cook. Her lemon meringue pies, brioches and cinnamon buns were particular favourites of friends and relatives.
Helen was an enthusiastic fan of hockey beginning with the Toronto Maple Leafs in her youth and later adding the Vancouver Canucks, but her real passion was her hometown Quesnel Kangaroos.
Helen enjoyed family camping trips, hockey trips following the Roos to
Ontario, trips to Hawaii and the Oregon coast and visits to relatives in
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Northern Ireland. She cherished her long-time friendships, especially with her Dragon Lake neighbours.
Helen is predeceased by her husband Bill, her brothers Jim, Alex, Ken and
Roy, sister-in-law Doreen, brother-in-law Ralph, nieces Heather and Sandra and nephew Bartley.
Helen is lovingly remembered by daughters Pat (Dale) White and Shannon (Jeff) Addis, grandchildren Greg and Garrett White, Kyrie (Graham) Williams, and Brett and Scott Addis, sister Chris, brothers Bob and Clayton, sisters-in-law, Doreen, Anabel, Marg, Audrey, and Marj, niece Kelly (Gord) Reiter and many other Canadian and Irish nieces and nephews.
