April 4, 1926 - October 18, 2024
In loving memory ~
Hedwig (Hedi) Benner, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed on October 18, 2024, at the age of 98.
Born April 4th, 1926, in Canstatt, Stuttgart, Germany, Hedwig helped her family and neighbours through World War II before immigrating to Canada with her husband Rolf Benner in 1953 and settling down in Nelson in 1954.
Hedwig was a resourceful and industrious woman. She grew food in her garden to feed her family and was a skilled seamstress and fiber artist, making and repairing clothing, upholstery, and other household necessities. Her works have always been practical, beautiful, and resourceful. Hedwig also dedicated over 20 years to volunteering for figure skating alongside her husband.
Hedi is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom miss her dearly and cherish the memories and lessons she gave them. She is predeceased by her parents, Marie and Theodore Weller, her brother Otto, her sister Else, and her husband Rolf.
In memory of a woman who valued supporting community and the environment, in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the North Shore Volunteer Fire Department through the Regional District of Central Kootenay, or to the food bank of your choice.
There will be a celebration of life for family at a later date.
