May 15, 1950 - November 16, 2022
In loving memory ~
With sadness, we announce that Gregory Michael Kalanchey, 72, of Vernon BC, passed away peacefully November 16, 2022 in Vernon Jubilee Hospital, after a more than six year battle with cancer.
Greg was born to father George Kalanchey on May 15, 1950 in Enderby, B.C. and was schooled in Revelstoke and Vernon, BC. Shortly after college, he served for a brief period as a member of the British Columbia Avalanche Patrol service, stationed in Roger's Pass. Greg went on to become a police officer and spent 30 years as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, stationed in Revelstoke, New Hazelton, Courtenay and Vancouver, throughout his career. In addition to working at several detachments and a range of posts, one of his fondest memories was representing the RCMP on a training mission to Kunming, China where he shared his knowledge and expertise for anti-narcotics police work.
Cranky (as he was affectionately known to some of his colleagues) was a word often used to describe Greg. To those who knew him, his unique view of schedule, obligation, and public safety often came off as a misunderstood grumpiness. But to those who knew him well, loved him, or just spent any amount of time with him, we knew his demeanor as a front for a soft heart and noble intentions.
Greg loved to spend time at his family lake-side property, enjoying the outdoors and sipping the occasional glass of wine. He was never one to sit still or miss out on a conversation.
Greg is survived by his puppy Stella, his sister Fran Hladun (Bill Mayor), his two daughters Lisa Kalanchey (James Moller) and Kelly Kalanchey (Marley Barnes), and his son Robin Kalanchey (Melanie Kalanchey), as well as his six grandchildren, Jack Kalanchey, Jaimie Bulman, Chase Kalanchey, Joshua Moller, Kourtney Bulman and Makenzie Moller.
Greg would have been the first to thank the doctors and nurses at the Vernon Jubilee hospital for their generous attention during his time in their care.
There will be only a private family service, at Greg's request. In lieu of any flowers, please make a contribution to the BC Cancer Foundation.
