July 29, 1947 - March 18, 2023
In loving memory ~
It is with a heavy heart that our family shares the news that Gord Barney passed away at home on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
Predeceased by his parents George & Eileen Barney, his brother Terry, and his sister-in-law Sandra, Gord is survived by his sons Clay (Brandi) and Martin (Dalys); grandchildren Samantha, Cathryn, Alex, and Jack; his long-time partner Bridget Watson, as well as her daughter Tracy (Ken), and grandsons Matthew and Parker.
Gord was a local author who self-published multiple books that shared stories, rhymes, and cartoons from his extensive career as a B.C. logger. Well known in Ladysmith, many will remember his regular cartoons in TAKE 5 Magazine and his "Logging Lore" interview which was part of the Ladysmith & District Historical Society's "Lives & Legends" video series.
Born in Vancouver in 1947, Gord moved to Ladysmith as a young boy. By the time he was 16 years old, he was already working in the forest industry. This was just the start of a long career, logging up and down the west coast of B.C., during which he spent significant time running a grapple yarder. Retiring after more than 40 years on the job, he continued to live in Ladysmith where he enjoyed being close to friends and family.
There will be no service by request, a donation in Gord's name can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
When he goes to meet his maker,
and the end to life has come.
He'll give the sign of the high-ball
with his upright pointed thumb.
You'll find him in the riggin',
right where the high-lead whistle toots,
and he'll be settin' gold strand chokers
in his high-top loggin' boots.
