Gladys Joan Zukowski

It is with deep sorrow and eternal love that we mourn the passing of our beloved mother Gladys Joan Zukowski. Gladys passed peacefully, surrounded with love, on August 18, 2023, at Mountain Lakes Seniors Home in Nelson B.C.
Gladys leaves behind her devoted husband of 72 years Henry Zukowski, their children Cameron (Donna), Debbie (Gary) and Michelle (Curtis). She was the beloved Nana of Shawn, Tara, Aaron, Bradley, Renee, Matthew, and Cassie. Cherished great grandmother of Chase, Cade, Brooklyn, Zoey, Tye, Abby, Jasmine, and Issac.
Gladys was born on August 9, 1936, in Port Arthur, Ontario. She was the youngest of 8 children, born to John and Mary Plummer. She is survived by her older sister Anita, whom she loved and cherished.
Gladys and Henry began their life together in 1951. Married for 72 years, they started their family in Alberta, where Cam and Debbie were born. Their next adventure took them to Lac la Hache, B.C., where they worked happily and tirelessly operating a 24-hour Restaurant, Truck Stop and Supermarket. From there they moved to Creston B.C., where their youngest daughter, Michelle, was born. In 1969 they settled in Nelson B.C.
Gladys was very active in the Nelson community, championing many causes.
Her love and devotion to God and the Catholic Church was infinite. As a member of the Catholic Women's League for over 40 years, she gave of herself tirelessly, whether it was endless baking, cooking, selling tickets or helping with the church bazaars and teas. Gladys loved greeting everyone at Sunday Mass and helping however she could in the Church. She especially loved her close relationships within the Church, the Priests of the Mary Immaculate Cathedral and with all the members of the C.W.L and Knights of Columbus.
She started T.O.P.S Chapters throughout the Kootenays, was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and was always available when called upon to "ring the bell" for the Salvation Army.
Gladys was a true "people person", a social butterfly, she had countless friends and could often be found at the mall, shopping, having coffee or out for lunch.
Through all of this, she helped her husband Henry manage many businesses, and raised a family. She lived every day with boundless energy, a skip in her step, a smile on her face and love in her heart.
Gladys's deepest love and devotion was with her husband Henry and family. She raised her children with compassion, kindness, and infinite love. She was always there to listen, give sound advice and lend a helping hand. She was the ultimate "nana". She spent countless hours helping with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, it was her greatest joy. Her love was unconditional and limitless, the true matriarch of our family.
We will forever carry her
love in our hearts.
The most beautiful angel in heaven is watching over us now.
The family would like to thank Dr. Janz, nurses, care aides and all the staff at Mountain Lakes. Your loving care and attention to Mom went above and beyond. She was your Nana too. Your kindness, love, and respect for her will never be forgotten. She loved each and every one of you dearly.
A funeral service will be held at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate, 813 Ward Street in Nelson, B.C on September 8, 2023, at 11:30 am. Please join us as we celebrate Gladys's life and peacefully lay her to rest.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Life Enrichment program at Mountain Lakes Seniors Community.
