She was predeceased by her husband Abe in November 2002, grandson Wayne Filmer and grandson Gregory Warkentin and also brothers Abe, Nick and Henry Siebert & sister Kay Heller. She is survived by her two sons Kenneth (Yvonne) and Paul (Nancy) and daughter Judith (Don Filmer) along with 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, brother Jack Siebert, sisters Helen Goosen & Ann Nichol. Gertrude was born in Ruckenau, South Russia to Nikolai and Gertrude Siebert on April 22nd, 1923. In December of 1924, Gertrude with her parents and brothers Abe and Nick left Russia through Poland and England and sailed to Saint John, New Brunswick. The family eventually settled on a farm in La Glace Alberta where Gertrude grew up. She lived a happy life of tending cows and chickens and exploring the bush surrounding the farm. On August 27th, 1937 Gertrude was baptized and joined the LaGlace Mennonite Brethren Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She met Abe Warkentin of Waldheim Saskatchewan in 1937 and they were married on July 17th, 1941. After 4 years of farming in LaGlace they moved to Chilliwack in 1945 where she and husband Abe settled into milking cows on their dairy farm in Greendale. She grew a large garden and preserved fruits and vegetables. She was constantly baking and sewing. She loved entertaining family and friends when they came to visit and we all will miss her beautiful welcoming smile. She joined the Greendale Mennonite Brethren Church and remained there for the remainder of her life. There she made many friends and did many acts of service. She had a very strong faith in God and was in constant prayer for her family. The family thanks the staff at MSA Manor for the gentle and compassionate care they gave her.
A celebration of life will be held at the Greendale Mennonite Brethren Church on a date to be announced. Online condolences to the family may be made to www.wiebeandjeskefh.com.
