March 23, 1931 - August 31, 2024

In loving memory ~

George Leo Hamp passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 31, 2024, at the age of 93.

He was born in Hafford Saskatchewan on March 23, 1931, where his family lived on a farm near Radisson. He was the youngest of 4 children to parents Emma and Hugo Hamp.

When he was very young his family moved to homestead on land south of Makwa Saskatchewan where he went to school and worked on the family farm.

Farming was not his interest so in his later teens, he left and went to Ontario and worked in a pulp camp. He always had an interest in construction work so he left on the train and travelled with a friend to British Columbia, stopping in Salmon Arm to work building fruit boxes. There was little opportunity to get a construction job so they left and travelled to Vancouver where he secured a job with Wilson Construction. They had work around Burns Lake so he ended up in Burns Lake in 1949, working on the new Dept of Highways building. He also worked on the new Beacon Theatre and several local schools and finished his training as a carpenter.

He soon met the love of his life and married Betty Brewer on October 27, 1951, at a ceremony at Paradise Lodge on Francois Lake.

In 1954, he went into a sawmill partnership with Nick Panas and had several sawmill ventures over the years. He went on his own and started doing construction work and built many buildings in the Burns Lake area. He started Flintstone Concrere in the early 70s and worked on many large mine and highway concrete jobs while supplying ready-mix concrete to the Burns Lake area.

George was very proud of the community and was a Kinsmen member for many years. He volunteered to build projects such as the arena, curling rink, library, skateboard park, Rob Read trail and the Rod and Gun inside washroom installation.

His hobbies included outdoor activities of fishing, hunting and camping and enjoyed these with family when he could get time off from his busy work schedule.

He is predeceased by his parents Emma and Hugo Hamp, his son Stanley Hamp, brother Udo Hamp and sisters Edith Halvorsen and Melita Weber.

He was survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty Hamp (nee Brewer), and his children Rita Chu (Gerry), David Hamp (Janice) and Randy Hamp (Gabriela). He has 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Family would like to thank Dr. Tammy Williams, the Nurses and staff at the Burns Lake Hospital!

There will be a Celebration of Life for George on October 5, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Island Gospel church in Burns Lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice but Dad supported the Canadian Red Cross faithfully.
