November 15, 1932 – December 11, 2021
Garland passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his children Gloria (Gordon), Sharon (Don), Gardner (Debbie), Alvin (Janice) and Brian, eleven grand children and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Doris and his parents, Joe Sun and Eeng Joe.
Garland was born in Vancouver, BC, the first of eight children. He grew up in Kimberley, BC where his parents established a small farm and market garden operation. He was home-schooled by his mother in the early years which enabled him to stay home and help work the farm. At age 14, he transferred to public school. Following graduation, he worked as a locomotive operator at the Sullivan Mine for a brief period.
Garland and Doris married in 1960 and Garland built their home at the family farm where they raised their family. In 1970, Garland purchased Jones Superette, a grocery store. For 33 years Garland and Doris enjoyed serving friends and the community during the week while working the farm on week ends. In 2003, Garland sold his grocery store to focus on working his farm.
Garland will be remembered as a man who valued integrity, hard work, family and friends. He will be missed and forever loved.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Cranbrook Hospital, the staff at Garden View Village, and the care team at Interior Health, for the outstanding care they provided to our father.
We will welcome family and friends to a Celebration of Life for our father in the summer of 2022 when it is safe to travel. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor our father may send donations to the Canadian Cancer Society at https://cancer.caObituary-
