May 4, 1935 - January 24, 2023
Passed away peacefully on January 24th, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. She was 87 years old. Frieda was born May 4th, 1935 after her fraternal twin brother, Albert. Her family, John and Katharina Siebert, brothers John and Albert, and sister Selma, moved from Saskatchewan to Sardis, B.C. when the twins turned 5. They bought a small, mixed farm on Stevenson Road
While attending M.E.I. in Clearbrook for Grade 13 Freida met Peter Nickel and a romance began. They were together for 67 years.
While Peter studied at Teachers' College in Vancouver, Frieda was the homemaker and soon, mother. More teaching moves and children followed. By 1967 the family numbered 8 around the dining table when they found a small hobby farm on Adams Road. This became their settling down place for 47 years.
Peter taught elementary school and Frieda held down the fort. They were very busy and they made a lot of friends. They took the kids camping often. After retirement they travelled far and wide to visit their spread-out family.
Frieda was a softball coach, gardener, church and school volunteer, pianist, factory worker, homecare aid, writer of genealogy books, mother, grandma, supportive spouse, and good friend. She has contributed to the goodness of life in the Fraser Valley and beyond for 80 plus years.
Frieda leaves behind her children: Sharon, Jim, Dianne, Darlene, Susan, and Jerry; 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Peter predeceased her this past October. The family appreciates the care and kindness given to both at Hampton House and Cascade Lodge.
A celebration of life for both Frieda and Peter Nickel is planned for Saturday, June 24th, at 2 p.m. at Yarrow United Mennonite Church, 4336 Eckert Rd., Yarrow, B.C. All are welcome!
