On April 9, 2019 the last living person born in the Ymir hospital, Evelyn Murray, passed away peacefully.
Evelyn Sarah was born to Edward and Sarah Emilson on July 15, 1922. Born and raised in Ymir, she attended school there and completed Grade 10. She worked at the Post Office, was Ymir’s May Queen in 1939, and met and married George Murray in 1941. They moved to Vancouver for a few years and returned to Ymir in 1944, where they then raised their five children.
Over her lifetime Evelyn loved fishing, playing golf, was an avid gardener and picked a lot of huckleberries in the mountains around Ymir. She became Post Mistress for the Ymir Post Office, a position she held for 25 years.
In her later years she played cards and scrabble, always had a book to read, did many jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, her husband George, grandson Andy and son-in-law Tom McGregor. Evelyn is survived by daughter Lorraine and four sons, Ken (Maureen), Jim (Trudy), Doug (Diana), and Jeff (Lisa), as well as 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 7 great- great grandchildren, and her very long time friend, Nessie Gallie.
Mom requested there be no service and Thompson Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.
Rest in Peace Mom – and perhaps on your next golf course you will achieve a much deserved “hole-in-one”!
