Ernest Kingston

Ernest Herbert “Ernie” Kingston, age 81, passed away peacefully at Gateby Intermediate Care Residence on Sunday, September 24th, 2006, surrounded by his family. He was born in Manitou, Manitoba on September 16th, 1925 and was predeceased by his parents, Herbert in 1963, Dorothy in 1981 and his brother, Robert in 1975. Ernie was raised on a farm in the Pembina Valley and enjoyed walking four miles to attend school whenever he didn’t have to stay home to do farm chores. He worked for Manitoba Hydro before becoming a driver for Manitou Transfer and Altamont Transfer. In 1966 Ernie moved his family to Vernon, B.C. searching for better job opportunities. He was first employed at the Vernon Army Camp and various construction jobs before joining Canadian Pacific Railway. Wanting to be closer to his family, Ernie got work at Riverside Forest Products – Lumby Division where he received recognition for 15 accident-free years before retiring in 1991. The retirement years were enjoyed travelling across Canada and the United States in a motor home, spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, lawn bowling and building things – especially birdhouses. Ernie became known as the “Aberdeen Road Birdman.” In June of 2000 Ernie suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. He took up hand quilting and sewing as therapy – quickly becoming proficient –

sewing and quilting finer stitches than his wife!

Ernie will be sadly missed by Kitty – his loving wife and best friend for 53 years. He leaves to mourn a wonderful blended family comprised of daughter, Karen (Thomas MacPherson), Lauren (Richard Purves), Tarah, Kaitlyn and Chelsey of Alexandria, Ontario; son, Tim (Linda), Christina and Michael Edwards of Vernon, B.C.; daughter, Sheila (Ken Nelson), Thea (Kurt Ehalt), Brad (Charlette Blain), great-grandson, Bryce Nelson and Kelsey Ehalt of Vernon, B.C.; sister, Dulcie (John Maloney) of Manitou, Manitoba; brother, Arthur (Rose Stemken) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; mother-in-law, Pauline Schraeder of Langley, B.C., sister-in-law, Marjorie (Bill Watkins) of Surrey, B.C.; aunt, Chrissie Kingston of West Vancouver, B.C. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation preceded a private Graveside Service which was held at the Coldstream Cemetery on Saturday, September 30th, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Allan Dawe officiating. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Ernie to the B.C. Heart & Stroke Foundation, #202 – 3402 – 27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S1 or the B.C.
