Dorothy Mary Alice Haggarty

Dorothy Mary Alice Haggarty

Dorothy was born November 8th, 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and passed away on September 5, 2012 Trail. B.C.

Dorothy moved to Trail in Grade 11. She went to Brandon with her husband until he went overseas and then to Victoria where her first child was born. After the war they moved back to Trail.

As a student Dorothy excelled in Track and Field events. Upon arriving in Trail she joined a church choir and met several people who became her long time friends.

Her favorite job was working at the Credit Bureau but once she was married she had to resign. She was very active in volunteer work and worked with the Cancer Society, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Thrift Store, the United Way, taught Sunday school and participated in all the Mary Martha Unit activities in the Trail United Church. She also worked with the Trail Skating Club and the Kootenay Region skating competitions.

She was very fond of bridge and as she got older joined the Seniors’ bridge. She cross country skied, curled, golfed and became an excellent bowler. She loved to travel. Although she spent her summers camping with her family she also loved the trips that she and her husband took each year.

Dorothy is predeceased by her parents, Alice and Arthur Haynes, her brothers, Stan and Ernie, and her husband Charles Haggarty in 2000.

Her family was her greatest joy and she is survived by her children; Peter (Diane), Robert, and Kathryn (Ivan) and grandchildren; Tracy, Scott (Joscelyn), Michelle (Andrew) and Elizabeth (Juan). Her great grandchildren; Alyssa, Megan, Sydney, Wesley, Ian and Amberlyn kept her busy.

A funeral service will be held at the Trail United Church on Saturday, Sept. 8th at 10:30 am. Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with arrangements.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Society at 908 Rossland Avenue, Trail, BC V1R 3N6 or a charity of your choice.
