June 14, 1930 - November 17, 2022
It's with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear father, on November 17, 2022. We share the joy that he has now gone to join his soulmate, Eleanor (2019)
Dad was born in Victoria on June 14, 1930 to Hazel Wilson and Clifford Charters. The Charters family were prominent Scottish pioneers in the Sooke area and his first ten years were lived in Victoria with his cherished grandmother Stella Charters. He took the pioneering spirit with him as he moved up the coast to Stuart Island area with his mother and step-father James Sumner. It was at Stuart Island he met the love of his life, Eleanor. The two were separated for a decade, each marrying others and having children, but eventually true love won out and they were reunited. They married in 1966 and were together overall for 63 years.
Dad embraced the pioneer "live off the land" life as a fisherman and a logger. He hunted and fished most of his life, and always had gardens, animals and at times livestock. He always owned his own businesses in fishing and logging and when he moved his family from Quadra Island to Campbell River, he took up selling real estate. For many years he co-owned Totem Realty until he retired.
Dad was one of the petitioners for the building of the Oyster River Fire Department and served first as a Deputy Fire Chief and then, for a time, as the Fire Chief. An honor he served with pride.
Truly a master of all he touched, Dad built a number of his houses and was a master of repairs. He could fix anything as long as he had duct tape and paperclips!
Dad is also pre-deceased by his step-daughter Donna and his brother Ross. He is survived by son Robert (Gillian), daughters Vicky (Barry), Michelle, step-daughter Candice, step-son Randy as well as siblings Janet and Len, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Thank you to all of the dedicated staff who cared for Dad, especially in his last days. Your care was very much appreciated.

Life Lessons
You may have thought we didn't see,
Or that we hadn't heard,
Life lessons that you taught to us,
But we got every word.
Perhaps you thought we missed it all,
And that we'd grow apart,
But Dad, we picked up everything,
It's written on our hearts.
Without you, Dad, we wouldn't be
The ones we are today,
You built a strong foundation
No one can take away.
We've grown up with your values,
And we're very glad we did;
So here's to you, dear father,
From your forever loving kids
