April 16, 1983 - February 1, 2023
In loving memory ~
Born April 16, 1983, and gone too soon February 1, 2023. With heavy hearts, Derek's family mourns the passing of our dear Derek.
Born in Calgary, growing up in Regina and Cranbrook, and returning to Calgary, he found peace and happiness by embracing the simple things in life. He loved his cats and would spend time walking and enjoying the outdoors. He took great interest in self-studying astrology and paleontology as well as anything about cats. Diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, Derek was a gifted artist, sketching perspectives as a child by the time he learned to walk. Though his condition often made it difficult "fitting in", his parents and family are so proud of him.
At this time and forever, his family wishes to commemorate his spirit and treasure our precious memories. Family and friends will remember and honour his passing in a private ceremony at a later date.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude and respect for the doctors, nurses and support staff of the Intensive Care Unit at the South Health Campus in Calgary for their exceptional care of Derek.
He shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary him, nor the years ever be forgotten. At the going down of the sun and every morning we will remember him.
Survived by his mother Margaret Hales, his father Roy Hales, his stepmother Kimberly Dick and his brother Corey Hales. He is also survived by his stepbrothers Chris Braun and Jeremy Braun.
