On September 8, 2011, Charles Leslie Martin passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home at Christina Lake. Les (as he was known to most) was born at Princeton, B.C., on September 6, 1928. He had just celebrated his 83rd birthday.
He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Hilda Martin, and his brother Robert Russell (1930). He is lovingly survived by his wife of 54 years, June; his two daughters, Beth (Walter) Plotnikoff and Laural (Phillip) Martin/Menchions; five grandchildren: Josh (Melanie), Nathan (Kate), Cassie (Chris), Kevin and Myles; his brother, L. J. (Pat) Martin (Freda) of Campbell River; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Les’s family moved from Hedley to Trail in 1939 where he completed his schooling in 1947. He worked in various jobs including being a baker for the 4x Bakery and Supervalu. He was well known for his delivery business and made many long lasting friendships. Les acquired many skills in the Trail area including making homemade wine and the love of cooking.
Les married June Ablett in 1957 and they moved to Christina Lake in 1967 where he worked at the local sawmill until its closure in 1981. He continued working with his good friend Fritz Beck in construction and then independently as a local carpenter. Les had projects on the go right up until the end. He was a volunteer fireman with the Christina Lake Fire Department just shy of 20 years.
Les was a kind and good hearted man. He was a genuine friend and took great care of his family and neighbors. He enjoyed a good road trip whether it was a drive around the lake, a quick trip to town or beyond. He liked his visits to the local pub for a cider and visiting with the guys to catch up on the latest Christina Lake news. He was always up for an adventure and good times with family and friends. Les (Dad) was loyal and true to the end and it is with great sadness that we say good-bye.
A celebration of life took place on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Christina Lake Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christina Lake Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 18, Christina Lake, V0H-1E0.
Cremation services entrusted to the Baker family of Grand Forks Funeral Home.
