June 7, 1939 – August 10, 2021
Casimier Adam Skorupa passed away August 10, 2021, in Kitimat B.C., aged 82 years, following a brief illness with cancer.
Cas was born in Maple Creek, S.K. and grew up in Hatton, S.K., where he enjoyed puttering on cars and tinkering on small mechanical projects. At age 18, he left home for Calgary, A.B., earning a machinist certification as a Diesel Mechanic. In 1967, Cas moved with his wife and two children to Kitimat B.C., where two more children joined the family over the years.
He worked at Alcan Primary Metal as a millwright for four years, later going on to work at 101 Sheet Metal, and Maia’s Plumbing and Heating. He was renowned for his large stature and strength, especially when moving hot water tanks and furnaces for house calls. During the recession in 1988, Cas moved back to Calgary, where he worked at several assorted jobs. In 2009, he relocated back to Kitimat and lived out a life of simple pleasures.
Cas’s family fondly remembers how he enjoyed the challenges of cooking and baking, whether it was fresh bread, big breakfasts for the family on Sundays, or brewing homemade root beer. He designated firewood cutting sessions as a family affair, coming home to build massive fires in the fireplace that fell under his life motto of “the bigger the better”.
He was an artist at heart and could never resist adding unique touches to objects and customizing them. Some of Cas’s later pastimes were finding thrift-store bargains and treasures, bingeing on episodes of Columbo, watching old westerns, catching up with friends, and zipping around town full speed on his scooter to get to his favourite hangouts.
Cas never apologized for any of his eccentricities. Much like the character Relic that he adored from Beachcombers, he lived his life with authenticity – the way he wanted. Cas will be remembered by his family as a romantic dreamer with a heart of gold. He was a man of faith that loved to contemplate in awe the mysteries of the Cosmos he is now a part of.
“Farewell for a short time, Dad. Enjoy your journey to the other side and reuniting with those you have missed so much for so long. Your peace is our peace. We will love you always, forever.”
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Cindy Chomistek, Tim (Liz), Skorupa, Denise (Bento) Pedro, and Tina Chalmers; his brother, John Skorupa; his sister, Florence (Gerald) Black; his brother- in-law, Raymond Elder; grandchildren, Blaine, Sarah, Ben, Christie, Myles, Cruz, Maya, William, and Kai; and great-grandchildren, Torin, Declan, Sierra, and Theo.
Cas was predeceased by his parents, Genevieve and Kasimer; sisters, Lucille Glagau and Nora Elder; sister-in-law, Barbara Skorupa; and son-in-law Leonard Chomistek.
The family of Cas would like to thank Dr. Li. Huang, and everyone at Kitimat General Hospital, for all the kindnesses and care over the years – he appreciated and respected you all so much.
There will be no service by request. Cas’s ashes will be placed with his parents at Maple Creek Cemetery, S.K. at a future date. Any donations wishing to be made may be sent to the charity of your choice.
