Carl David Mendlow

May 16, 1960 – May 14, 2023
In loving memory ~
Pre-deceased by his parents William and Reva Mendlow, and nephews Ben and Matti Sullivan.
Carl is survived by siblings Eric and Ellen, wife Susie, (nee Sullivan) of Merville, children; Danny (B.C.), Sarah Metcalfe (David), grandchildren; Isaac, Isabelle and Appolina (Cambridge, U.K.) As well as many in-laws, nieces and nephews remember him fondly.
Born in Pgh, Pa, USA, Carl and Susie were high-school sweethearts. They moved to Ohio while Carl attended Antioch College. A visit to family in BC changed their lives. They moved to Oregon, married, and emigrated to Canada. Carl worked as a tree planter with his brother-in-law (and friend) Tony Sullivan. Carl and Susie lived in Cumberland, then Merville, sharing a magical, adventure-filled friendship and love, welcoming two children.
Carl moved back to Washington State University to get his BA and won a scholarship to Yale. He studied Law and Math, eventually earning his Master’s in Mathematics.
A diagnosis of schizophrenia altered his life, but he kept in contact with his family when he could, sharing his love of math and learning with his kids. He was a legal researcher for many years, then ran his own business.
Carl, Susie and Danny went to England for Sarah’s wedding. He walked her down the aisle, waltzed with Susie, and spent time with his children and grandchildren. More recently he and Danny reconnected and had a wonderful visit in LA in December 2022. La Chaim!
Carl was an amateur magician, an avid reader, a music lover, a Steelers fan, and a crusader for the rights of the mentally ill and disadvantaged. For the last 5 years, he found solace in his Jewish faith. Carl died in Long Beach, CA of heart failure and is buried in the Mt. Olive Jewish Cemetery. Shalom
